These news segments reinforce the perception of "normalcy" to their audiences, and here's why. The content we consume, especially from the news and social media, shapes our understanding of what is acceptable or typical. Even if we don't consciously agree, these platforms significantly influence our subconscious beliefs. This impact highlights the power of media in shaping societal norms and perceptions.

This concept directly connects the reading, particularly when considering the functions of mass communication. The dissemination of information, especially through surveillance and correlation, keeps viewers informed about current events while offering context and interpretation to simplify understanding. Additionally, the limited effects theory highlights how news outlets selectively filter content, sharing only what is deemed necessary or appropriate for the audience. This careful curation underscores the media's role in shaping public awareness and perception.

My Fantastic Team/Group Experience

During the summer of 2024, I had the opportunity to intern as an HR DE/I at Versiti Blood Center of Wisconsin. One of the most significant aspects of this experience was the group project, where all interns were divided into teams to research a topic and present it to the Executive Leadership Council (ELC). Each team was supported by sponsors, supervisors, and project managers. I was fortunate to be one of the project managers for my team, which was an exciting challenge.

Effective Communication and Leadership:
As the project manager, I ensured that all team members were on the same page, understood the project goals, and communicated consistently with our sponsor and supervisor. I also made sure everyone knew their responsibilities. However, things took an unexpected turn when one of our team members suddenly disappeared due to a family emergency that required her to leave the country. This unexpected setback forced us to adapt and adjust our strategy to ensure the project's success.

Overcoming Communication Barriers:
One of the significant challenges we faced was information overload. At the halfway point, our team was overwhelmed with resources, information, and expectations that needed to be organized. When our teammate left, the remaining three of us had to take on the additional workload. Despite the struggle, we persevered and eventually succeeded. The key to our success was the guidance and support from the resourceful professionals around us, who embodied the concept that "a leader should train team members about group techniques for meeting facilitation and conflict resolution as well as individual skills such as listening, communicating criticism, and mediation" (Wheelan 2005). Through active listening and feedback, we were able to stay on track and reach the finish line.

Lessons Learned and Takeaways:
This experience was truly fantastic because of the skills and knowledge I gained. I learned the importance of effective communication, leadership, and adaptability in a team setting. I also realized that with the right support and guidance, teams can overcome even the most significant challenges and achieve their goals.

Hi Everyone! Below is a video that can help deepen your understanding of connecting and communicating within your teams. Enjoy!

Apply or relate the theory to a real or imagined situation and explain how the theory assists in further understanding the situation relating to interpersonal communication. Include at least one ORIGINAL image (you take the photograph).

Autonomy vs. Connection: The desire to be independent versus the desire to be close and connected to others.

EX: I am the oldest of four siblings—three girls and one boy: me (20), Ana (18), Gaby (16), and Ayden (7). Despite the age differences, we all share close and cherished relationships that are often affectionate, sometimes clingy, and full of warmth. However, while we value our closeness, we also recognize the importance of personal space. We each have moments when we prefer solitude and appreciate time alone. As my mom often says, "All my children NEED their alone time... they spread out throughout the house into their own spaces," and it's true! This balance allows us to stay connected healthily and has taught us the value of operating as both individuals and a unit.

Predictability vs. Novelty: The need for stability and predictability in a relationship versus the desire for excitement and spontaneity.

EX: I’ve lived on campus since my freshman year, and along the way, I met an amazing friend who was once my roommate and is now my neighbor. Her younger sister lives just across the hall from us. Since we all have pets, we’ve created a routine to ensure they’re cared for when one of us isn’t on campus. This plan allows us to coordinate pet care seamlessly. Beyond this, we also randomly check in on each other’s pets to keep them familiar with us and help build trust among them.

Openness vs. Closedness: The tension between wanting to share personal information and maintaining privacy.

EX: I began working during my sophomore year of high school, and the experience has taught me valuable lessons. I’ve learned that it’s just as easy to be closed off as it is to be completely open. In the workplace, I aim to strike a balance by being open and sharing what’s necessary for a productive environment. This mindset came after many failed attempts at finding the right balance. Once I understood how to navigate professionalism and openness, it became a powerful tool for my growth.

While I do share certain things at work, I also choose to keep much of my personal life private—not as a way to avoid sharing, but as a means of setting healthy boundaries. These boundaries help maintain a professional atmosphere, unless sharing more is truly necessary. This approach has brought a sense of peace to my work environments. Even when coworkers share personal details and expect the same in return, I’ve learned it’s okay to either share or hold back, depending on my comfort level and the relevance to the workplace. It’s all about finding a balance that works for me and aligns with the professional context.

Improving your Communication Skills - Integrated Staffing

What aspect or aspects of Communication interest you most (intrapersonal, interpersonal, group, public or mass communication) and why?

The aspect of communication that interests me the most is public speaking. While I actively practice and work with all forms of communication, including intrapersonal, interpersonal, group, and mass communication, public speaking stands out as the area that excites me the most for personal development.

One reason public speaking captures my interest is because it is a skill that requires a unique blend of confidence, clarity, and engagement. Unlike interpersonal or group communication, public speaking often involves addressing larger audiences where the speaker must maintain control of their message while simultaneously ensuring that it resonates with a diverse range of listeners. It’s a dynamic form of communication that challenges individuals to think on their feet, deliver compelling arguments, and maintain the audience's attention. This requires a lot of preparation and practice, which I find to be a rewarding and fulfilling process.

Although public speaking is my primary focus, I believe that my foundation in intrapersonal communication has played a significant role in my growth. Intrapersonal communication involves self-reflection and internal dialogue, which helps me clarify my thoughts, analyze situations, and prepare myself mentally for any communicative task. Whether I’m preparing for a presentation, working on self-improvement, or rehearsing ideas in my mind, intrapersonal communication gives me the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of my perspectives before expressing them to others. This form of communication has been essential in shaping my ability to communicate effectively in any context.

Furthermore, practicing interpersonal and group communication has also enriched my public speaking skills. Engaging with others in smaller settings has helped me develop a deeper understanding of how people respond to different cues, tones, and expressions. It provides immediate feedback, which I can use to refine my public speaking strategies.

In the end, public speaking offers me an exciting opportunity to showcase all that I’ve learned from various forms of communication. It allows me to connect with people on a larger scale, and I look forward to continuously improving in this area.

What are your professional goals or professional areas of interest and why? If you are “undecided” identify professional areas you are interested in learning more about and Why!

I am currently pursuing a bachelor's in Business & Management with a minor in Communications, and my professional goal is to work in Healthcare Administration, potentially focusing on billing, insurance, or policy controls. This career path aligns with both my academic background and personal interests.

Healthcare administration intrigues me because it allows me to make an impact on the operational side of healthcare, ensuring that systems run smoothly and efficiently. I’ve always been drawn to roles that combine organization, leadership, and strategic thinking, and healthcare administration seems to fit this profile perfectly. The industry offers a chance to be involved in the important behind-the-scenes work that helps healthcare institutions operate effectively, providing support to healthcare professionals and ensuring that patients receive the care they need.

One of the aspects of healthcare administration that appeals to me is the billing and insurance sector. This area is complex and crucial, as it ensures that healthcare providers are compensated for their services while making sure that patients understand and manage their healthcare costs. It requires a strong understanding of both the business side of healthcare and the regulations surrounding insurance and billing. I am interested in learning more about how these processes work and how I can contribute to improving efficiency and transparency in this area.

Additionally, I am interested in policy controls within healthcare administration. I believe that understanding and implementing policies is essential to maintaining quality standards, regulatory compliance, and ethical practices in healthcare organizations. Policies affect everything from patient care to staff operations, and having a solid grasp of these controls can ensure that healthcare institutions meet legal and regulatory requirements. By focusing on this area, I would be able to play a role in shaping policies that can lead to better outcomes for both patients and healthcare providers.

Ultimately, my goal is to leverage my business and communication skills to become a successful healthcare administrator. I want to contribute to the efficiency and effectiveness of healthcare systems, particularly in the areas of billing, insurance, and policy, to help create a more streamlined and accessible healthcare experience for everyone involved.
